Grounding-what and how

Quick Summary

Often one hears that we should ground.  What exactly is grounding, how does one ground oneself, and what are the benefits of doing so?

Grounding is a process of anchoring one’s own energy and being fully in one’s body.

There are many ways to ground.  I describe several below in detail.  For this quick summary, the short answer: one can ground by drinking water, eating, holding a grounding mineral like labradorite, and/or laying on the Earth. One can also ground via meditative practices.

Grounding allows one to raise their vibration while remaining solidly in one’s physical body. Grounding keeps you focused and clear-minded.

If one feels foggy, absent-minded, confused, and/or light-headed, one should ground.

Deeper Dive

I recall the first time I heard the term “grounding” as something I should be doing.  This was only a few years ago when I knew virtually nothing of energies nor how to work with them.  I naively thought “if I ground, how can I raise my vibration?”  At that time, I wrote it off as nonsense.  However, the concept continued to sit at the edge of my mind.  And when I met someone who felt solid, confident, and focused, somehow I knew they were ‘grounded’.  And thus, I began to understand the benefits of grounding.

As mentioned in the quick summary above, one naturally grounds by drinking water and eating. This is because eating and drinking brings you in tactile contact with your body’s functions. You ground into the process of these activities. Some people find taking a shower to have a similar effect.  Other people find it has the opposite effect so you will have to see for yourself.

Sitting or lying upon the Earth is a powerful way to ground.  Mother Earth naturally wraps her energy around a person, giving them a big hug.  To be a hugely effective grounding experience, one can work with Earth’s energies using intention and imagination. My mentors, Lena Stevens and Anna Stevens Harrington of The Power Path, teach this process in their sessions.  They accompany it with the most profound drumming and vocal duet, making it a very memorable experience.  In essence, I paraphrase their suggestion: to ground most effectively with Mother Earth, imagine a root extending from your root chakra (near your tailbone) down into the Earth. This root goes deep and branches out and holds securely to Earth, very similar to a tree.  Once the root is in place, imagine sending down anything that no longer serves you.  Mother Earth effortlessly recycles this and returns nurturing, healthy, energy that makes you solid and sturdy like a tree.  This can be done quickly or via a deep meditation, whichever you prefer.

The grounding practice that is most effective for me is a meditation that I developed on my own, for my own purposes.  I’ll share it here in case its beneficial to readers.  I imagine that I am a spiral; wide at the top near my head and decreasing down to a point near my knees.   I could go into great detail here about the purpose of the spiral, its metaphysical qualities, etc.  However, to keep the blog short, I’ll simply say the spiral is multi-dimensional and metaphysical.  When I need to ground, I imagine my spiral spinning downward.  Down, down, down, grabbing and holding as it goes.  It anchors into the Zero-point of the divine void, where no-thing exists and every-thing exists.  There I anchor myself solidly to the core of the Cosmos. A visual analogy for you: hanging pictures recently, we had to use anchors for the drywall.  It reminded me of the spiral that I envision.  If you’ve ever seen the drywall anchors, that’s what I imagine when I ground.

Conclusion

As with everything, we suggest one finds the grounding technique that resonates with them.  Or create their own.  For example, if one likes boating, perhaps anchoring like a ship resonates the most. Or if one is savvy at electrical work perhaps think of the grounding wires.  There is no right or wrong.  It is completely up to each unique individual.

Again, if one finds oneself scatter-brained, unfocused, irrationally fearful, feeling off balance, out of sorts, or disharmonious, one should ground.  Believe me, it works.  The more one practices grounding, the more effective it is and the more quickly one will be grounded.

Aho, Nakeetah.
