Life on the Waterfront

There’s a sleepy little town on the waterfront in the north where everyone knows everyone. Days slide into weeks here as generations move about the fishing harbor.  Life here is usually predictable.

Recently, life in this town got momentarily disrupted when one of the locals heard bustling and voices inside one of the abandoned buildings along the water’s edge. He opened the door to find a group of teens scurry into hiding upon his arrival. That evening, an emergency town meeting was held. Questions flew around the room: “Who are these teens and where did they come from?” “What is to be done?” Soon a committee was formed and a plan of action was agreed upon.  The following day, a group of townspeople approached the abandoned building. “We know you’re in there,” their spokesperson yelled. “Come out so we can help you.”  No word from the teens.  The spokesperson continued “Come out.  No one will get hurt.”   On and on the town’s spokesperson called to the teens.

Finally, the door of the abandoned building opened a crack and a slender young teen came out with head looking to the ground.

He slowly moved away from the door.

Four townspeople ran forward.

They grabbed the boy.

And they hugged him tight

Shocked at this reception, his knees buckled.

They all sat on the ground in one massive embrace.  His fear turned into sobs, and they held him for what seemed an eternity until he could cry no more.  Only then did they stand. Still embracing him like a valued member of their families, they guided him gently to one of their homes where he would stay.

Witnessing this astonishing event from a cracked window of the drafty abandoned building, slowly three more teens came out.  They received the same warm embraces and were welcomed into the community.

One teen remained in the abandoned building, so a few of the townspeople went inside to talk with her. Wanting to remain strong and tough, she waved a gun around and spoke belligerently.  A town’s woman spoke gently and tried to encourage the girl to come with them.  This was met with yelling, cursing and gun waving from the girl. There was a long pause in the action.  Then, the townspeople began chatting with her about the town.  One by one, they introduced themselves and told her a bit about their family, their jobs, their hobbies, on and on.  They ignored the gun and simply treated her like an honored guest. She began to relax as they continued their conversation.  They talked about the daily activities of the harbor and their community.  When her curiosity was peaked and set the gun down, they knew she was interested in the fishing boats.  That’s when one of the older, well-weathered men of the community made a decision.  He came forward in his flannel shirt, suspenders, and work boots.  With his no-nonsense personality, he described his fishing career. Then, his eyes lit up as he affectionately began describing his boat.  And, he simply said “come, I’ll show you.”  When offered, she hesitated a moment and then slipped her arm through his. And he nobly escorted her out to find his generations-old fishing boat bobbing in the harbor.

In that moment, he and his wife became parents to a strong, determine woman and a valued member of their community.

Conclusion:

As you can see, LOVE comes in many forms.  And, the only thing any of us really wants is to BE LOVED; loved, respected, valued.
